Legal Consultations

A considered answer to a specific question, in writing where you need to rely on it.

A consultation is a defined piece of work: you set out the question, we read what is relevant, and we give you an assessment of where you stand and what the realistic options are. It is frequently the most useful hour a client spends with us, and it often establishes that the problem is smaller, or differently shaped, than it appeared.

Where a position needs to be relied on, by a board, a counterparty, a bank or a regulator, we provide a formal written opinion setting out the analysis, the authority relied on and the conclusion, with the assumptions and limitations stated explicitly rather than buried.

What we do

Initial consultation

A structured discussion of the matter, by telephone, video or in person at our Barsha Heights office.

Document review

Review of the contracts, correspondence and filings relevant to the question, before rather than during the meeting.

Written opinion

A formal opinion where a position needs to be relied on or recorded, with assumptions and limitations stated.

Second opinion

An independent view where advice has already been received and a client wants it tested.

Meeting attendance

Attendance at a commercial meeting or negotiation across the UAE, where having the position understood in the room is worth more than a note afterwards.

Questions we are asked

What happens in a first consultation?

You describe the matter, we ask the questions that determine the position, and you leave with an assessment of where you stand and what the options are. If documents are sent in advance we read them beforehand, which makes the time considerably more useful.

Can a consultation be held remotely?

Yes. Consultations are held by telephone, by video or in person, whichever suits. Clients outside the UAE are a routine part of the practice.

In what language are consultations conducted?

English and Arabic.

What is a written legal opinion and when do I need one?

A formal document setting out the analysis and conclusion on a defined question. It is generally required where someone other than you needs to rely on the position, such as a board, an investor, a bank or a counterparty.

Is what I discuss confidential?

Yes. Matters discussed with us are treated as confidential.
