Personal Status and Family
Marriage, divorce, custody and inheritance, under the framework that applies to you.

The legislative framework: what the personal status legislation provides, and which of the two regimes governs your family.
Personal status covers marriage, divorce, custody, guardianship and inheritance. Since 2023 there have been two frameworks in the UAE rather than one, and which applies to you depends on who you are.
Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2022 on Civil Personal Status applies to non-Muslims, with Executive Regulations in Cabinet Resolution No. 122 of 2023. It provides civil marriage, divorce without proof of fault, and joint custody after divorce. Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024 issues the Personal Status Law that governs otherwise.
Abu Dhabi additionally operates its own civil marriage law, which differs from the federal position in places, including the minimum age to marry. Where a matter touches more than one emirate this is worth establishing early.
